dinosaur story

This year I wrote a picture book. I’ve been looking for an agent and, although I received some very nice declines, I haven’t tricked anyone into representing me yet. Here is a sample of a two-page spread. Hopefully when you see this you’ll want to see the rest.

Another month, another drawing challenge. I’ve been participating sporadically with #Dinocember. These are my results so far:

obsessions

Today I thought I’d take a good long look at what makes me tick.  I drew the things that I keep going back to, the things that inspire me year after year.  I’m not including bands (The Beatles) or cartoonists (Bill Watterson).  I consider these as topics of inspiration rather than individual entities.  Lincoln, of course, is bigger than a man (and he was a pretty big man).

dear mr. spielberg

We haven’t met, but I have a big favor to ask.  I’m a lifelong fan of yours, since ET came out when I was 3.  Far be it from me to impose, but this is a matter I cannot entrust with any other director.  Please make Jurassic Park 4.  Make it for me, make it for the children, make it for selfish money reasons: I don’t care.  Just make that movie.

Let’s face it, neither of us is getting any younger.  Jurassic Park is fantastic, but how long has it been?  Almost twenty years?  Way too long.  Not to be rude, but The Lost World was kind of phoning it in, and JP3 wasn’t even directed by you.  The world needs another Jurassic Park movie, and we need it from you.

Jurassic Park is far and away the best dinosaur movie ever made.  I know because I’ve seen a lot of dinosaur movies.  They range from terrible to pretty bad to campy.  People think they can slap some dinosaurs into a movie and sell tickets.  They don’t care about dinosaurs like you and I do.

You took a great story (possibly Michael Crichton‘s best work) and used the most advanced technology available to bring those dinosaurs to life.   Not only that, you crammed that movie with dinosaur in-jokes and little homages to the people who spent their lives researching dinosaurs.  Jurassic Park has layers.  It does not, however, need to be your final word on the subject.  There is plenty more to explore.

I know you’re busy so I’ll end this letter with my humble suggestions and be off.  Get Tom Hanks and Cate Blanchett, hire a screenwriter who actually cares about dinosaurs, and get your pal George Lucas to make the visual effects.  You can shoot it quickly between Academy Award movies if you want, I don’t care.  Just make it so I can go out and see it, please.

Thanks!

love, kid shay

hat trick

They say good things come in threes.  This has certainly proved true for me this past month.

First, Isis and I moved into our new house:

Hearst 1

The view is particularly inspiring:

Hearst 2

Then, my mom brought me this piece of amber with bugs trapped in it:

amber dino DNA

From this humble piece of fossilized amber, I will one day run a park chock full of dinosaurs.

You’d think these two events would put me “over the top,” as they say.  Well, in one final, extraordinary twist of fate, I received a signed CD by Falling Rock’s musical muse Esperanza Spalding:

L1020869

There is a story behind this.  I sent Ms. Spalding my latest book, Scenic Byways, and included a comic strip in which she pays a visit to Falling Rock National Park (this would hypothetically occur when she wasn’t busy accepting a Grammy or opening for Prince).  My comic appeared on her Facebook page and very soon after I got a mysterious envelope from a record company in Spain.  The signed CD was inside.

I’m not sure if these things are connected, but I do know that, for the rest of my life, I will look back on this short time period with awe and gratitude.

APOLOGY CORNER: Sorry, SKS.  I hope this doesn’t take your Year of Shaft & Son out of the well-deserved spotlight.

dinosaurs for Election Day

I was trying to think of an interesting thing to say today, what with the election and all. And yet, even as we Americans look to the future, I found myself stuck in the past…

The prehistoric past!

apatosaurus stegosaurus tyranosaurus

Vote, you Americans! Vote like your entire species was about to go extinct and future societies would judge you based on this one single act.
