happy halloween!

My pumpkin this year can best be understood by tilting your head slightly to the right.  This wasn’t an accident; it might be an homage to Andrew Bird though.  True to pumpkins past, this friendly guy started to grow mold long before Halloween.  He will have to become a part of my first offering of compost to the city of Portland.  But that’s tomorrow.  Tonight, he will shine.

I was talking to my friend about that sultan of swing Edgar Allan Poe, who looks a lot like John Cusack now.  Years ago I fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting the grave of E.A. Poe in his hometown of Baltimore.  Poe is buried in grand style befitting the grandiosity of his writing style.
Now everyone knows that Poe didn’t write his own stories – Shakespeare did – but it was nice to see the marker of an American legend, surrounded by snow.  It’s also nice to know that tonight Poe’s decomposed corpse will rise again to terrorize and befuddle many a high school English student.

the incredible, invisible hummingbird

What you see in the photo above is a hummingbird in our backyard.  Really!  There is a hummingbird who frequents the tree in our backyard for what I can only assume are nefarious schemes.  The other day I tried to photograph him with the results posted above and below.
Can’t see him?  Neither can I.  He is small – not small for a hummingbird.  Small compared to larger animals like ground sloths and giant squid.  He is green, just like the leaves that surround him.

Even though he can’t be seen here, he brings me immeasurable joy every time I see him humming around the tree.  Maybe one day I’ll catch a photo suitable for a birdwatching blog, but for now I’ll just post here.

friday robots

Today’s Friday Robots are loosely (oh, so loosely) based upon the poster for Goodnight, and Good Luck, a movie that George Clooney directed.

Bonus feature!  This is a robot from an old issue of Popular Science:

Happy Friday everybody.

friday robots: prehistoric robots

These robots come from a time before I knew the doodles I liked to draw would be known as Friday Robots.

You see, I always drew these things.  It was only four years ago that I realized they had a place on my blog and in my heart.  Both paintings once hung in my small studio apartment in Boulder.  Combined they covered 76% of the wall space.  Did I mention it was a small place?  Whatever.  I had room for my drawing table, my futon, and my dreams.  That’s all anyone needs in a first apartment.

Happy Friday everybody!
